That day seems as usual as any other day. I know that my lab boss who travels a lot was back to lab that day. But I had no idea that he would spread me an opportunity beyond my expectation.
Walking in the hallway, I was still thinking about the research discussion I had with my colleagues. Turning right, I saw boss coming to my direction. "This summer, you are going to Goodyear." He talked hastily and then hurried away. This hit me like a cotton-candy from the sky. I looked around and saw no one else in the hallway. He didn't even mention my name and god knows whom he was talking to.
Returning to the lab, I was still in that cotton-candy kind of dream. Anyway, now at least there was someone I can ask. My upper classmate SH saw the confusion on my face and didn't wait for me to ask. " Dr. L came up with the idea during our onsite project meeting with Goodyear. He suggested to have continue the next phase through your summer internship. You will be working at Goodyear this summer." SH kindly explained. He is among the few of my colleagues that I really enjoyed working with, a great person and admiring technical skills.
Wow, so that is true. I didn't try any thing and a Fortunate 500 company (The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company caught me as an intern). This is too good to believe.
Afterwards, when I can finally calm down to think about it, I realized that although it may seem to be all of a sudden, this was actually something I planned. Remember how hard I tried to get into this lab, because of the vision that I am gonna graduate with my Master and a job offer in this country to make everything count? The reason that I chose such a harsh challenge in the first place was that this lab was such a unique and excellent place to get professionally prepared, not to mention its industry collaborators from all over the world. Yes, I didn't ask for an internship opportunity at a Fortune 500 company, I just asked my boss if I can join his lab. He gave me 3 months to prove to him that I was worth it. I made it. He saw the potential and was willing to provide even better opportunities to his students. Therefore, I actually planned this internship myself unconsciously when I had aimed at this boss initially.
Considering the difficulties for an inexperienced international student to get an intern opportunity, I claim this as a cotton-candy dream coming true.
If you strive for something good, you might ended up getting something better.
Everything happened for a reason. If you plan for a dream, it can come into truth faster.
