This story began with a interviewee our company recently invited. The first time I opened his email, I was amazed at his diversified work experience- worked at at 3-4 companies with distinct background across multiple countries-Iran, US, Japan etc, started as a freelancer on multiple cool projects and won the third place in a industry Challenge Cup, which is a nationwide technical competition with 1million cash award for the 1st place. Well, this resume alone opened my eyes.
The next day, our team met with him in the conference room. He shared his past experience doing contract work for multiple manufacturing companies, his achievements and preferences which he discovered during that period, for example, with a wife working as a nurse, flexible hours can be really helpful. A confident person as he is, he is by no means arrogant, but rather down-to-earth instead. He spoke of his achievements confidently, and his weak spots equally comfortable. I've seen many technical people as an engineer myself, some of them come with the natural to confuse others with details, especially those outside of their field. An excellent technical expert, as I comprehend, is able to deliver the most complicated concept with layman terms. The highlight came when he shared with us his demonstration for the nationwide competition. This is a solution he made from scratch with only data source from one of his partners. I've seen another solution before which failed the competition even with a strong company support and the difference is obvious. As he created it from scratch, he was able to explain every detail vividly with a confident posture. He expressed his idea of this specific technology and the value he saw in this solution. What's more, another existing solution he saw might be even more convenient.
I become a fan instantly. It's more about his achievements. It's his way of expressing that flow out naturally, making you believe that this is the spot for him, where he can really shine. While many developers disregard others calling them "coding monkeys" and the stereotype of lacking leadership talent, this guy admitted it and told my boss bluntly," I don't want to be a project manager, I just want to be a developer." That's so cool!
While the same morning, I was in a tele-interview for a PhD student in IT. While our company valued his IT background, his only IT-related work experience is for the school department (we all know how non-technical the on-campus job can be) and he hesitated frequently when it came to detailed technical questions. Absolutely everyone fresh out of school needs a real-world start, but how can your future boss trust you if you've conveyed the message that you want to make tremendous contributions with a weak skill set. Employment, in my mind, is a mutual fit, not something others simply offered you out of luck. You got the offer because you deserve it. With additional investment, people believe you will shine.
That's why I was touched when the cool guy was talking. When you find your spot, it doesn't matter if your weakness, it doesn't matter much how people stereotype your role. As long as you are passionate about it, you do the job so well that few people can replace your role. You got to be hired given that case.
I was motivated. In everyday routine, it is so easy to go with the flow without knowing where you can realize your utmost value. However, don't lost your motivation to explore your passion. There is a shining spot for everyone, and it differs for one to another. Take your mind to explore.
Good luck my friends, on your way to your dreamland.
